Well, here is where the real work lies. We are moving along in the edit and hope to have some pieces to show the world in the coming month. Thanks to everyone for sticking with us and keeping up. We will be updating much more often.

Mike Washlesky – Editor

Mike, originally from Dallas, found his way to Austin when he was 19. It was soon there after he decided eating spaghetti every night was becoming a bore, and has been a culinary adventurer ever since. Mike has been a filmmaker full time since 1999 in various roles including Director, Cinematographer, and Editor.

Mike has a Mexican wife, a 5 year old daughter, a cat, a dog, and 3 grills. You can find him frequently tending the fire in his cabinet smoker and drinking beer when he’s not hunting wild game in West Texas.

Nerd Nite Tomorrow!

New Addition to FTLOM

After a few months of planning, we are happy to announce a new addition to the group.

Mike Washlesky(these ribs are his creation) will round out our editing chops and help us drive this meat train home. Look for more updates on Mike, the edit and the project in general in the coming months.

We’re still here! After a very successful first round of shooting we are in the thick of the editing process as well a shooting some additional material.

We will be back with more news in a bit.

Luling – City Market

So to everyone who said you have to go to Luling, we have done just that.

It was great. Joe, the pitmaster, was a gracious host and we enjoyed getting time to see him and his crew work their magic. The food was great, all of it, but the sausage stood out for a number of us, perfectly coarse without falling apart, and delicious.

Matthew enjoyed himself a tasty Big Red and then sat down to help some City Makret crew sort beans for a while. He got pretty good at it.

For the Love of Meat – Photos at Corona Cafe

Join us this Saturday at 7:00pm (till 9) at Corona Cafe to open a showing of photographs taken by Matt Johnson and Jeff Jones. All your favorite BBQ Documentarians will be there and you can take in these photos of the people and places we visited while drinking the beer that goes best with BBQ, Lone Star.

Corona Cafe is located in the same center as the Nomad Bar (where we will most likely be going after) and is right off 35 around 51st and Cameron. Come out and hang with us before you go out for your Saturday night. Or just hang with us all night.

BBQ Festival

Sunday’s Texas Monthly BBQ Festival was fantastic. Great to see old friends and meet new bbq masters. Special thank you to Cathy at Texas Monthly for helping us with the media passes and to everyone at Texas Monthly for throwing a great event.

We got a chance to meet Daniel from Full Custom Gospel BBQ as well a one of the donors to our Kickstarter page (which only has a couple days left so if you have a spare dollar or two…) Hung out with Gerald and crew from City Meat Market, John from Smitty’s, Kerry, Hershey, and Ms. Tootsie from Snows, Wayne from Muellers and a whole lot more. Met Sgt. Barbecue who started a bbq joint in Afghanistan. People came from all over. One guy had paid over $700 and flew in from Minnesota just to eat bbq.

We have set up a couple of follow up interviews with some folks from our first trip and are scheduling those soon. The film is coming together great.

Texas Monthly 1st Annual BBQ Festival

We are proud to announce our acceptance as “Media” into the Texas Monthly 1st Annual BBQ Festival. This event is without a doubt the landmark event for true Texas BBQ and we are very excited to be covering it in it’s first year. We know that with Texas Monthly’s commitment to Texas BBQ and their readership’s support, this will be just the first of many to come.

Day 8 – Part 2 Davis Grocery in Taylor and then home

We apologize for the delay in posting this last visit. I blame the meat stupids (an condition discovered by Matt Wallis where, after eating lots of meat, you become extra stupid)

Anyway, the last stop on our first trip was to Davis Grocery in Tayor. We had stopped by on our way out of Taylor earlier and really felt like we needed to come back and visit.

James Davis the proprietor was a gracious host and we had a good chat with him. I was too full of meat from Snow’s and honestly not feeling that great so had to pass on his BBQ but Matthew Johnson had some good reviews.

We then made it home and after 10-12 hours sleep all felt somewhat more normal. After weighing ourselves it looks like we lost some of the weight we gained after the first few days on the road. I credit this to our very strange version of the atkins diet where we survived on very small amounts of meat (we learned portion control about mid-week) and lone star.

We are now looking at where we need to go next to make this complete and start editing. Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Nomad on Sunday and thanks to all of those who have donated at kickstarter. We are almost halfway there and could use all the help we can get!

Day 8, Part 1 – Snow’s in Lexington

This morning we got up very early (4:30am) and hit the road up to Lexington to visit Snow’s. Snow’s was listed #1 in Texas Monthly a while back and we were wondering if it would live up to the hype…..

it did. Easily one of the best briskets we have had. Tootsie, the pit master, was fantastic and Kerry (Snowman) was as well. We are currently in Taylor getting ready to go to Davis Grocery for the last stop on this tour.
